Workplace Trauma

Every woman will experience adversity at some point in their career. It's the cost of doing business. Adversity helps us learn and grow. The discomfort of stretching allows us to emerge stronger. Our star shines a little brighter.

But what happens when adversity slowly and insidiously becomes traumatic?

When challenge becomes unmanageable, when it stays beyond the process of learning, when it's unrelenting, it is no longer adversity. It is TRAUMA.

How does trauma from work manifest?

  1. Chronic and prolonged stress from unfair treatment, unrealistic demands and ongoing bullying, harassment and discrimination overwhelms the coping system.

  2. The profound psychological impact from negative experiences can lead to anxiety, depression and helplessness.

  3. Traumatized employees may develop strong fears about going to the workplace or engage with colleagues leading to avoidance and isolation.

  4. When adversity turns to trauma, it leads to diminished self worth and a distorted sense of work identity, especially when there are accompanying feelings of devaluation and lack of recognition.

Common emotional responses to trauma include:

  • Anger

  • Guilt and Shame

  • Withdrawal
